Why Jay-Z Was in Albany on Monday

He's working on something big

Jay-Z was in Albany on Monday, May 19, to lobby lawmakers in support of his Times Square casino proposal, according to the New York Post. He met with Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to promote the bid backed by Roc Nation, Caesars Entertainment, and SL Green.

The Post reports the casino would be built at 1515 Broadway—currently home to The Lion King—and aims to compete for one of three downstate casino licenses. His visit came the same day a rival Hudson Yards proposal was dropped due to community backlash, possibly giving the Times Square bid an edge.

Still, the Post notes the project faces strong opposition from groups like the Broadway League and the “No Times Square Casino” coalition. Final decisions on casino licenses are expected by the end of 2025.
