Two Train Cars Land In Hoosic River As Cleanup Efforts Begin

Correction: An earlier version of this article reported the tracks where the derailment occurred were operated by CSX when the area of the tracks is operated under Berkshire & Eastern Railroad, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Railroad.

Rensselaer County officials report details of a freight train derailed in Valley Falls Wednesday night, which has caused closures on State Route 67 between State Street and Requate Road, which are likely to remain until at least Friday.

Officials say that 10 of the 94 cars pulled by the freight train derailed from Berkshire & Eastern Railroad tracks, with two of them landing in the Hoosic River. There were no injuries in the crash. No hazardous materials are known to be involved in the wreckage, as the cars derailed were carrying plastic beads and rapeseed oil which did spill into the river.

As of now there is no known cause of the derailment.
