September 17th is Citizenship Day! Citizenship Day (
) marks the anniversary of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. It also recognizes all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.
Dating back to the day September 17, 1787 the Constitutional Congress of the United States of America held its final meeting. Any idea why? It was to sign the Constitution of the United States of America. Although the document did not go into effect until two years later on March 4, 1789, today is the day to celebrate such a vital piece of documentation in our history!
The transition to Citizenship Day goes back to 1940 when "I am an American Day" was celebrated on the third Sunday in May. In 1952, Congress moved the date to September 17th and renamed it “Citizenship Day.” In 2004, the official name changed to “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.”
