You Can Now Keep Your Shoes On at Albany Airport

A big change at security checkpoints

If you're flying out of Albany International, there's one less thing to worry about at security. The TSA no longer requires travelers to remove their shoes at checkpoints, a change that took effect Monday.

The Department of Homeland Security says the update is meant to make things smoother for passengers and reduce wait times, without cutting corners on safety.

The shoe rule has been around since 2001, after a man tried to light explosives hidden in his sneakers on a flight to Miami.

Thanks to newer technology and better screening methods, officials say it’s safe to move on from the long-standing rule.

This update comes as the TSA continues its push for REAL ID at airports. So far, they report 94% of travelers are already compliant.

Bottom line: next time you're headed through security in Albany, your shoes can stay on.
