Find out how to stay safe

The New York State Police are warning New Yorkers to be on alert after Troop K received reports of a new phone scam targeting families across the state.

In these recent cases, scammers have been impersonating members of the NYSP, claiming that a loved one has been arrested and that you need to speak with a prosecutor about posting bail. The callers often create a sense of urgency — hoping victims will hand over money or personal information before realizing it’s a scam.

Authorities want to make it clear: the New York State Police will never ask for money or discuss payments of any kind over the phone.

If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and contact your local State Police station to confirm whether the information is legitimate. Never share financial information, personal details, or send money to anyone claiming to be from law enforcement.

Scammers frequently use fear tactics and emotional pressure, so staying calm and skeptical can help protect you and your loved ones.
