Shops were located in Albany and Saratoga

After 17 years serving the Capital Region, Primal has officially closed its doors.

The local butcher shop announced on Facebook that both of its locations shut down at 5pm on February 24, 2026. The stores were located in Stuyvesant Plaza in Albany (1475 Western Ave) and Wilton Plaza on Route 50 in Saratoga County.

Owner Tim Howland said the decision came after “careful consideration,” citing rising costs and increasing pressures facing small food businesses. He shared that it’s no longer possible to operate while maintaining the quality and service customers expect.

Since opening in 2009, Primal built a loyal following across the region, becoming a go-to spot for everyday meals and special occasions. Howland thanked customers for their support and reflected on the connection the business had with the community.

He also encouraged people to continue supporting local restaurants, delis, and especially butcher shops, calling them vital to the local economy.

Primal’s closure marks another loss for small, independent businesses navigating ongoing economic challenges.
