Bear Sighting in Rensselaer County, Here's What to Know

Canva

A black bear has been reported visiting a few neighborhoods.

A black bear has been making the rounds in Defreestville, with recent sightings on Bloomingrove Drive, Winter Street Extension, North Road, and nearby side streets. Police believe it’s the same bear moving through the area in search of food.

While black bears are generally shy and avoid people, they’re more likely to linger where food is easy to find. This one has already hit a few bird feeders. To help it move along:

  • Bring in bird feeders, especially at night

  • Secure your trash

  • Don’t leave pet food or grills unattended

If you spot the bear, stay inside and don’t approach it. There’s no need to report sightings unless the bear appears aggressive or poses a direct threat. Police and NYS DEC are keeping an eye on the situation.
