On December 9, 2003 a Dutch cargo ship called the Stellamare was at the Port of Albany to pick up two massive GE generators. Loading the two machines, which weighed in the tons, required cranes, cables and nearly a dozen crew members to secure them in the hold. After they were loaded that afternoon, the boat suddenly jolted and tipped onto its side. Eleven of the crew wound up in the water, they were all eventually rescued by nearby tugboats and the Albany Fire Department. Three other crew members were trapped inside and drowned.
