'School's out for summer' doesn't mean all school zone speed cameras are off

Just because school's out for summer doesn't mean all school zone speed cameras are shutting down.

Cities across New York State continue to use automated enforcement measures, including school zone speed cameras and school bus stop-arm cameras, to improve safety for students, faculty, and staff. Programs like these have become increasingly common as communities look for ways to reduce speeding and make roads safer around schools.

The use of school zone cameras has also sparked discussion statewide. Some cities have reported significant decreases in speeding violations over time, while also generating millions of dollars in ticket revenue. Supporters say the ultimate goal is safer streets, while critics continue to debate enforcement practices and traffic-calming alternatives.

In Albany, a limited number of school speed zone cameras will remain active during summer school programs. According to the City of Albany, the following school zone cameras will operate during summer school hours:

🚨 Albany High School (700 Washington Avenue)
July 13, 2026 – August 17, 2026
Monday–Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

🚨 Hackett Middle School / TOAST School (45 Delaware Avenue and 94 Delaware Avenue)
July 6, 2026 – August 7, 2026
Monday–Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

🚨 Pine Hills Elementary School (41 North Allen Street)
July 6, 2026 – August 14, 2026
Monday–Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

🚨 KIPP Capital High School (296 Northern Boulevard)
June 29, 2026 – July 17, 2026
Monday–Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

🚨 Green Tech High School (99 Slingerland Street)
July 6, 2026 – July 30, 2026
Monday–Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The city notes that all other school speed zone cameras not listed above will be turned off at the end of the school year.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and pay attention to posted speed limits near schools, even during summer months, as students and staff may still be on campus for summer programs.
