Local Sports History Revealed on this Old Northway Billboard

Do you remember?

Perhaps you spotted it heading north on the Northway between exits 10 and 11. The billboard is undergoing a facelift, which revealed a beloved sports team that had an amazing 20 year run in the Capital Region.

Wait, aren't the Red Wings a Detroit team? Yes, but the Adirondack Red Wings were a pro hockey team based in Glens Falls and were the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. They first took to the ice in 1979 and played home games at the Glens Falls Civic Center, now the Cool Insuring Arena.

The Red Wings became one of the AHL’s most successful franchises, winning four Calder Cup championships in 1981, 1986, 1989, and 1992. A number of players eventually advanced to the NHL.

Despite their success, the team was disbanded in 1999 when Detroit shifted its AHL affiliation elsewhere. The departure marked the end of an era in Glens Falls, but the Adirondack Red Wings remain a cherished part of local sports history, as seen on this old Northway billboard.
