First Ever Girls Wrestling State Championships

Girls wrestling in New York state has gained official recognition with the launch of the first State Girls Wrestling Tournament. The sport has seen significant growth, with over 2,000 girls now participating in wrestling across the state. Section II has the most girls teams in the state, with 25 schools having board-approved girls teams. The state tournament will feature a single-class double-elimination format, showcasing the talent of local girls who have earned spots in the competition. The growth of girls wrestling has been attributed to the opportunity for girls to compete against each other in freestyle wrestling, a style that differs from boys high school wrestling. The State Championship kicks off Thursday in Albany at MVP Arena!
